Winter (senior picture ideas for guys) is coming…
It doesn’t really hit like the original script, but we’re going with it!
If you’re anything like me, you aren’t a winter fan.
Most of us feel this way. At least, I think so.
So, it might not sit well with you to get your senior pictures done during a season you don’t appreciate.
But I hope to change your mind once you finish reading this blog!
Oh, and if we haven’t met before, hi there, I’m Stacy! I’m a high school senior photographer for the Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN, areas.
Trust me, I know my stuff when it comes to capturing senior pictures you’ll be happy with—no matter what season you’re in.
And if you think we’re going outside, you don’t know me that well. But, you soon will!
Just know that all of my winter senior picture ideas will be inside.
Anyways, let’s dive into some winter picture ideas for guys, shall we!?
Without further ado…

The Pros and Cons of Winter Senior Picture Sessions
Winter weather can be harsh in Fargo, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t positive aspects to the chilly season!
Yes, even I am admitting that.
But let’s say there are unique opportunities and challenges associated with planning and executing a photoshoot in the winter months.
Here’s how I’d break it down…
Pros of Winter Photoshoots
- Stunning Backdrops: Fargo’s winter transforms locations into a winter wonderland, which provides a unique seasonal aesthetic.
- Seasonal Clothes: If you’re a winter (ifykyk), I bet you’re thriving with the colors and attire that goes with this time of year—cozy knits, plaid scarves, and cool, dark colors.
- Less Crowded Locations: Popular spots downtown will have fewer people milling about, so you can take some epic photoshoots all by yourself without interruption.
- Soft Natural Lighting: Overcast skies in winter can offer up some incredibly flattering lighting for self-portraits.
And, like everything, there’s an equal and opposite to these…
Cons of Winter Photoshoots
- Harsh Weather: See, this is the part I’m not keen on. If you live in or around Fargo, you get it because you know that we can have extreme winter weather and temperatures below freezing. Just thinking about it makes me shiver…
- Unpredictable Weather: And with that comes unpredictability. It can be sunny one day, then snowstorm or have windy conditions the next. This can lead to constant rescheduling due to weather changes.
- Limited Color Palette: Because of the dusting or dump of snow, Fargo can primarily be grey and white this time of year, which might not work for everyone.
- Less Daylight Hours: Shorter days mean less daylight, which means there’s less time to work to maximize natural light.
All of this considered, we don’t have to scrap winter senior picture shoots completely. We just have to get creative! Don’t worry, I’ve got lots of practice with this. And I’m sure you do, too!
Here’s how we can work with what we have and bypass the cons above…
How to Maximize Senior Photoshoots in the Winter
- Pick a Variety of Locations: Choose indoor and outdoor options that fit your personality, or just stick to indoor locations. Flexibility is key!
- Plan Outfits Carefully: Opt for stylish yet warm clothing if you shoot outside, and always layer up! If you’re indoors, this isn’t as big of a deal.
- Check Out Weather Forecasts: Keep your eyes on weather updates to prepare for your shoot and travel to get to your locations.
- Use props: Pick props like blankets or hot beverages to get into the season and add warmth to your shots. Plus, they’ll help keep you warm, too!
No matter what you decide to do for your winter senior photoshoot, I’ve got you covered! It’ll be a memorable experience you’ll cherish for years—whether your photoshoot goes viral or not.
My 6 Winter Senior Picture Ideas for Guys
Alright, so maybe I don’t hate winter.
Yes, I’m still on this subject…
To be honest, I think it’s the cold I can’t deal with.
And if you’re like me, you’ll be safe during my winter senior picture photoshoots. Because more often than not, I will be pursuing you to stay inside, I can promise you that.
Glad we have that covered.
But I don’t want you to think we can’t get creative or make your senior picture session the best ever!
There are so many fun ideas and places to take advantage of when you’re inside. Plus, we’ll be warm, so there’s that!
Here are 6 winter senior picture ideas for guys in Fargo, ND:
Your High School
Use what you have! You might be surprised how stunning pictures can be in somewhat ordinary spaces. Plus, you spend so much time at your high school, so you’re bound to have some favorite places within it—like the gym, weight room, and more.

For one of Trae’s shoots with me, we went to his high school’s theatre.

I captured Jonah in his high school’s robotics lab.

Holden’s senior picture session took us to the weight room at his high school.
Plains Art Museum
If you’re an artist yourself or you enjoy art, this is a great option for you. The Plains Art Museum boasts so many options to take incredible pictures—from classes, exhibits, gardens, and collections.

I took Robby’s senior pictures here, which added some art and culture!
West Fargo Sports Arena
The West Fargo Sports Arena is a huge complex with everything a hockey guy could want, including an ice rink and multiple outdoor plazas.

Jameson and I hit the ice for his senior photoshoot.
Krolls Diner
This retro American diner is honestly too cool. If you love Americana, Krolls Diner is a great place to take senior pictures you’ll never forget. Plus, their food is incredible.

Another epic shoot with Trae in this retro-inspired diner.
Fargo Air Museum
Have dreams of becoming a pilot or working in the airline industry? Or do you just love planes or travelling? The Fargo Air Museum should be one of your top choices for taking your senior pictures.

Cash and I went to the Fargo Air Museum to capture his senior pictures.
Botanical Brothers
Plant lover at heart? Then Botanical Brothers is the place to be! They have everything from plant walls to places to sit to a branded neon sign.

We took some senior pictures for Jackson that brought the plant jungle vibes.
