How to Look Good in Senior Photos (and Feel Great Too!)

With high school grad just around the corner, now is the perfect time to think about how to look good in your senior photos.

Does it sound like something you or your teen have been thinking about recently? Well, call us mind readers because this blog is for you!

You know, feeling great in your own skin is the real key to looking your best. But let’s be honest, it’s easier said than done, right? Still, I’ve got no doubt you’ll rock that confidence, not just for your senior pics but every day!

Because of social media and the age of oversharing, most people are used to being in front of a camera. But your phone camera and my camera are completely different!

As a senior high school portrait photographer in Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota, I know firsthand that being nervous about doing a photo shoot is totally normal.

That’s why I like to bring positive energy to every shoot and get to know my seniors to help them move past their nerves.

I’ll talk about this later in the blog, but one of my tips for feeling and looking good is to be organized and have a plan. And what better way to get that going than to book your or your teen’s senior session

This blog will cover my top 7 tips to crank up your confidence so you’re looking and feeling good for your high school senior session.

Ready? Let’s get into it.

My 7 Tips to Look and Feel Good in Senior Photos

Alright, you want to know how to look good in senior photos? I’ll tell you!

As I said above, it’s all about confidence and feeling good about yourself. How you get there is kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure!

My top 7 tips for looking and feeling good in senior pictures aren’t just for senior photoshoots. Feel free to keep these in your back pocket when feeling a little low. I guarantee they’ll serve as a great reminder and checklist for returning to your most confident self!

Like Ru Paul says, “If you don’t love yourself, how the heck you gonna love somebody else?”. Remember: it all starts with you and feeling good about yourself!

On that note, let’s get into my top 7 tips for looking (and feeling) good in high school senior photographs.

Hype Yourself Up

This can look different based on what works best for you!

Have a killer playlist that gets you pumped up? Put it on while you’re getting ready and in the car on your way to your photoshoot location. Love reciting positive affirmations in the mirror? Do it! Want to dance it out to your favorite song? Get your groove on!

Whatever gets you hyped up and feeling excited, go ahead and try it out. It’ll help shake the sillies and nerves out, trust me!

Do Things You Love

When you need to chill out and feel a sense of zen, you know the best ways to do that. Some people thrive in a group setting; others want to be by themselves and read a good book. You may like playing sports or running to clear your head. Whatever it is, choose something that’ll make you feel great and balanced. And hey! Why not go to a location for your senior photoshoot where you feel most comfortable? A diner? Theatre? Record store? Wherever you feel most ‘at home’ is where you will feel the most confident.

Spend Time With Your People

Being around your closest family and friends brings you instant calm. They know you as your truest self and love you in so many ways. It’d be tough not to feel confident and amazing after spending time with them! So bring a family member or friend to hype you up at your senior photoshoot. Who doesn’t love a hype-wo/man?

Do a Trial Run

Hey, there’s a reason why there are practice rounds and dress rehearsals for performances! Practice is key to nailing it and building up your confidence.

Just like those situations, you can bring that to your photoshoot experience. Choose your outfits, try them on, and get everything else ready as if you’re heading out for your session. Get your family or friends to snap some photos of you around the house or outside at your fave spots.

It may seem silly, and you may feel a little silly doing it, but that’ll bring an element of fun into the mix, which will come out during the real photoshoot!

Plan Ahead

If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready. Pick your outfit or outfits ahead of time—try them on, too! If you want outside opinions, ask your family and friends what they think.

While you’re at it, get organized with how you want to style your hair and/or makeup for the day of. Even pick out accessories you might want to bring and map out the timing of leaving your house. The less you have to think about on your photo session day, the better!

Wear Your Favorite Clothes

Putting on your favorite outfit just hits different. You KNOW you look good, and you’re feeling yourself. And that’s the special sauce that helps you truly shine in your senior session! Though sometimes superficial, clothes can amp up your confidence and make you feel invincible.

Maybe it’s a pair of blue jeans you wore when you had your first kiss, or a jersey you wore when your team won the state championships. If it holds sentimental value to you, bring it and use it!

Bring a Good Luck Charm

Whether you’re superstitious or maybe a little bit stitious (please tell me you chuckled here), it doesn’t hurt to bring a little luck with you! It can be something well known for luck, like a four-leaf clover, rabbit’s foot, or something sentimental to you or that has brought you luck. It doesn’t even have to be an item—like we mentioned before, you could bring a person for moral support, like a best friend! Whatever you decide, make sure it’s the best choice for you.

Gain the Confidence for Your Senior Photo Session

I hope my top 7 tips on how to look good in senior photos gave you at least a starting point! Working with teens and their families for as long as I have, you pick up some tricks along the way.

Even as an adult, you develop skills to find confidence and help others find it, too! As a high school senior photographer, part of my job is to make you feel comfortable in front of my lens. If I’m doing that and you’re behind the scenes using some of my confidence-boosting tips, we’d have an incredibly successful shoot!

And that’s what it’s all about—having a great time and being given pictures you’ll cherish for the rest of your life.

These tips are a great guideline for looking and feeling your best, but another piece of the puzzle is finding a photographer you connect with. I’d love to be the one you choose! So, feel free to book a session with me for you or your teen’s senior portraits.
