Your Creative Outdoor Senior Picture Ideas Guide for Fargo, ND

Where do I get creative outdoor senior picture ideas?

First of all, what I think is creative is completely different from what you would think is creative.

It’s incredibly subjective!

Because of this, I don’t push any of my ideals onto my clients and their parents.

That doesn’t mean I don’t have good ideas, because I do! At least, I think I do…

And I’ll step in when asked for my take or advice. But I like to let the high school seniors I’m taking pictures of speak for themselves before stepping in.

Listen, I know you came here for a guide to finding the best creative ideas.

I mean, it’s in the blog title.

And it is a guide of sorts.

But I’m going to let you in on my secret for capturing the best moments and making outdoor senior sessions creative.

If we haven’t met before, I’m Stacy! I’m a high school senior photographer for the Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN, areas.

Now, back to why you’re here… a guide to ensure a creative outdoor senior photoshoot.

Let’s get into it!

  3. How do I like to spend my free time?
  4. Is there a particular place that is special to me and makes me feel like my best self?
  5. Do I have a style or vibe I want to convey to others?
  6. Do I have favorite pieces or colors in my closet that I love wearing?
  7. What kind of pictures am I most drawn to (candid, closeup, posed, etc)?
  8. Do I have a favorite time of day for lighting, vibe, and mood? What is it?
  9. Is there a pet or animal in my life that I want to include in some shots?

How to Set Yourself Up For Success and Be Comfortable

Part of this is on your photographer (hopefully, that’s me!), but you should try to do everything you can to feel comfortable and confident with yourself without any outside help.

  1. Build Rapport With Your Photographer: This is why we meet before the photoshoot—to get to know each other on a personal level! I’ll tell you about myself and my experience and get the pleasure of hearing more about you. If we meet after you’ve read this blog and answered some of the questions above, bring them with you!
  2. Make a Photoshoot Playlist: Fill it up with your favorite songs that fit the vibe of your photo shoot. Want to stay energized? Pick songs that light you up and make it impossible not to dance along! Want to remain calm? Add tunes that ground you and ease your nerves.
  3. Practice in the Mirror: I’ll be your mirror during our outdoor photoshoot, but practice posing beforehand to get a feel for it. And this will help you determine what poses you like best!
  4. Move Around: During our shoot, I’ll have you move around to make it effortless and natural. We’ll pump up the dynamics and have you walk, spin, interact with props, and more.
  5. Authentic Smiles: Another thing to practice in the mirror is a natural and genuine smile. Try with your mouth closed and open and other variations. It’ll help bring out your authentic self in front of the camera.
  6. Take Some Downtime: Hey, it ain’t easy getting your picture taken! It’s a lot of work. We’ll take breaks when you need to chill, have water, or eat something. It’s a marathon, not a sprint!
  7. Check Out Previews: Along the way, I’ll share some preview shots with you to make sure we’re on the same page or allow us to tweak anything if needed.

6 Creative Outdoor Senior Picture Ideas

I know, I know… creativity is in the eye of the beholder. But these six clients stand out as memorable outdoor senior photo shoots because they added a little extra flair!

Lyndsie

I may be biased since Lyndsie is my niece, but this was a memorable senior session for me, not just because of that! We spent a beautiful day around Fargo and West Fargo playing around with smoke bombs, which was a blast (literally!).

Katy

Katy is a true artist. During her senior session, we showcased her talent and passion for photography and painting. She even painted herself, which I had never seen before.

Sarah

Sarah is a talented dancer who was great at hitting unique movements and poses. She brought lots of props (guitar, dance shoes, oboe, books, letterman’s jacket) that we used throughout the shoot!

Breck

Breck was a natural in front of the camera! We played with lighting on the glass to create a sunset vibe to simulate golden hour. When we hit the golf course, we punched up the personality, and he was in his natural element.

Jameson

We chose the perfect time of day to shoot Jameson’s senior session. The sun was just right, and there was a haze on the football field.

Brooklynn

Working with Brooklynn, who loves sunflowers and sunflower fields, was so fun. She even has sunflower tattoos on her arm! We didn’t have the best sunflowers year, but we found an incredible field in Harwood, ND, to get some truly memorable pictures of her.
